CHALLENGE

Our first real challenge in life was birth. Remember how difficult that was? If you could, you'd probably be embarrassed that you ever complained on a typical day.

Life has been filled with challenges and fortunately, most not as traumatic as birth. But when they are, we're lucky to have had that opening moment of challenge - first breath and then open eyes to...wow - we realized we were not in cozy Kansas anymore.

It's a joy to ponder the universe.  Trying to sort it out.  It is a statistical arena: the building blocks, the forces, time, and things we still don't understand.  I wonder, most of all, about what we don't know that we don't know.

Focusing back down to Earth, astronauts and those who fight for democracy and freedom are often on my mind, as well as on those who persevere to make discoveries that benefit others.  But at the moment, astronauts are on my mind.

The competition pool of right stuff candidates is large and loaded with competence.  Candidates accept the challenge to beat the odds and many with the right stuff - for numerous reasons - still do not make the cut.  Candidates are people from all walks of life and - like those who make the cut and so many that don't - those with the right stuff are incredibly strong in character, integrity, perseverance, and aptitude.

From what I could see among those who made the cut, including several friends, each were clearly confident in their abilities for mission success, and yet humble.  Apparently being confident yet humble had a lot to do with how they became so strong in character, integrity, and perseverance.

Did I mention courage?  They sit atop seven to seventeen million pounds of explosive thrust to reach even more inhospitable environs for a much longer time.  If you watch test flights of rockets...well, hence the courage.

The challenge for mankind today is to highlight the good to all ages.  Revere the truly deserving of admiration within mankind.  Give them oxygen.  That augments the positive nature and positive efficacy that follows of humanity.

Luckily, that isn't rocket science.  It's also sustainable.  Beware: Revering and heaping oxygen to the opposite is not sustainable for mankind.
